The power of nature thundered down the Waitaki River valley (South Island, New Zealand) yesterday as vast amounts of excess hydro-lake water were released in a bid to flush the river clean.

The flushing flow started by state-owned power company Meridian Energy yesterday morning increased the Waitaki’s flow to more than three time its average. By noon, more than 960 cubic metres of water a second (cumecs) was being spilt from Lake Benmore. More…
