A big thank you to all who emailed me to enquire if I was affected by the recent earthquake around Christchurch in the South Island of NZ.
I am based in Auckland so was well away from the quake, and thankful for that. But this event reminds me, and all who live here in Godzone that NZ straddles along and across the junction of two major continental tectonic plates, and the most active junction at that. A nickname for NZ is ‘The Shaky Islands’ and it is probably true.
But, I also know that there are many places in the world where day-to-day living is more dangerous than here, and many more places perhaps more safe – but less beautiful. On balance there is little choice, the rivers still flow, the fish still swim, and in surroundings that strip faint worry away in a heartbeat.
I am reminded of the uniquely English stoicism after the Underground bombings a few years back, encapsulated in a poster, (originally designed during the Blitz in WWII), that sprung up around London with the words, “Keep calm and carry on” – nothing more to be said really.
